The glow from the setting sun brings out the Coca Cola bottle found on Assateague Island, Maryland.

The shape of this sea glass makes me wonder if it was on a ship that caught fire, causing the glass to melt. With no markings, there is no clue as to what it might have been. The piece was found on Cape Ann, Massachusetts.

author’s note

I have been photographing images in nature for as long as I can remember. Over the years, coastal venues have become my favorite place to take pictures and sea glass is a natural extension of that subject matter. Photographing sea glass began as a way for me to preserve that special moment of discovery which is such a magical sliver of time.

My sea glass photographing journey first began during one particular beachcombing occasion. The antithetical appearance of a large, glowing aqua color gleaming against the quiet stillness and stark emptiness of the beach with no footprints, shells, or other debris in the sand startled me. The mood this created was something I wanted to capture and remember so I snapped a few quick pictures. After that I was hooked. The ever-shifting moods of the seashore complement the mystery and sense of adventure surrounding sea glass and that is what I strive to depict in my photos.

I love capturing images of sea glass in its natural found location before I pick it up, but sometimes that is not possible—either because I don’t want to risk losing the piece to the incoming waves or the natural light is not good. Some of the shots I take are carefully set up in order to get the best use of the light or scenery of the area. Some of my favorite shots are ones that depict an entire scene, and the sea glass is the secondary subject, because it tells a whole story or sets a mood.

Because of the sheer beauty of the natural surroundings where sea glass is found, and the unique beauty of sea glass itself, it is a subject that I will always enjoy photographing, and through these pages I hope you will enjoy this journey with me.
